About this deal

And for the enduro and downhill enthusiasts among us, Specialized has done a great job incorporating extra protection around the toes and heel cap, and the slightly raised padding along the inside of the ankle is another nice touch. We have a separate post highlighting the best indoor cycling shoes for use with Peloton or a smart trainer. Keep in mind though, that this becomes more of an issue the more experienced you become with your cycling.

Clipless shoes – the kind that clip right into your pedals – take a bit of getting used to but they offer a lot of benefits. The Rally’s shock-absorbing EVA insole isn’t quite as good as the Specialized or Ride Concepts insole, but it does boost comfort when rattling down a rough descent or overshooting a jump and landing flat. Second, the dual Velcro closures lack the precision and easy adjustability of a Boa or ratchet-style system. The cleat setback of 10 millimeters is especially intriguing—essentially, it’s the positioning of a flat-pedal shoe combined with the power of a clipless connection, resulting in less foot fatigue and better control on technical terrain.

They're characterized by their very firm soles, which aid power transmission to your pedals, making them an excellent choice for individuals seeking maximum performance. Specialized also extends the cleat rails slightly, offsets the cleat box and also opens it up, allowing the cleat to engage smoothly.

Featuring a carbon fiber sole with a durable PU leather upper, it stays rigid and doesn't flex for support during your most intense sprints or saddle efforts. The Trailcross XT is easily the grippiest flat pedal shoe Five Ten makes, the secret source being the latest Stealth Phantom rubber with a squidgy 55a compound and the usual dotty lug pattern. It’s certainly not a high-performance design like the Shimano ME5 above, and committed riders should steer clear, but we think the Berm offers a whole lot of bang for your buck. The laces are a light, ever so slightly stretchy material that never comes undone and there's a place to stash them so they don’t get in the way.

The moulded upper is lightweight and wipe-clean, and the interior gets a great fit thanks to a gusseted tongue and removable arch wedge. The shoes use a string-cinch Speedlace system which looks great in theory but we have our issues with consistency and attendant fiddling. Instead of a stiff strap that pulls the the opening above the tongue closed, Fizik connects the straps of the Tempo Powerstrap R5 all the way down to the base of the shoe. For some reason manufacturers are reluctant to use really tacky rubber on their flat shoes because they cite reduced durability, but with a flat shoe, grip generated by the rubber is everything.Like the Fizik, the Adidas Road BOA cycling shoe missed because of a competing product from the same brand. If your local terrain is particularly tough or you get out in wet conditions, the synthetic upper material is a nice upgrade over the heavier and more absorbent leather/mesh combination that comes on the standard model.
