About this deal

I really wanted something smaller to do all the same things (mostly) that I normally do on the big version. Add complex creative flourishes to your beats and melodies using Perform FX – a set of tactile, creative effects exclusive to MASCHINE. People who remember the days when adding a new piece of gear meant spending 8-12 hours re-running cable, installing drivers, and reloading your entire VST library will appreciate that the Mikro works with just about any software DAW without any compatibility headaches – at least, in my experience. Maschine Mikro Mk3 works both as a stand-alone program and with a DAW, so you can produce music at any time.

Roll off the highs for a thick, murky veil, or use the resonance to create sounds that float into self-oscillation infinity. Naturally, the effects can be assigned to Macro controls and automated, and if you have a hankering for external processing, up to 16 stereo outputs are provided. Plus, as a heavy Logic Pro user, I was skeptical of having to learn a whole new software that’s quite different from the traditional DAW setup. The Shaker engine gives you acoustic shakers and maracas, and the Kettle engine offers rich, resonant timpani.MASCHINE MIKRO is the perfect first step for music producers already using a DAW to get hands-on with their creative process, letting them tap out beats and melodies, and quickly build up loops and track ideas. BASS AND DRUM SYNTHS: Create your own kicks, snares, hi hats, and more, with the flexible Drum Synth, and dial in rich, studio-ready bass tones with Bass Synth – exclusives to MASCHINE.

Record from your audio interface to capture from vinyl, play in a guitar, or grab any other sound into your track.Another handy feature was the ability to keep separate sounds loaded to each pad, but also load any individual pad’s instrument to the keyboard where I can use the keys to find the specific pitch I want.

I love how small and unobtrusive the little MASCHINE Mikro unit is, and combined with the very powerful software, it’s an incredibly capable device. Adding a device like this only adds to the functionality and usability of the whole creation process within the MASCHINE system. I guess whether iMaschine is a fabulous addition or a bit of fluff depends on your perspective on the iPad generally. Warm, versatile, and with plenty of character – this effect is designed for spontaneous splashes of echo. Yet arguably it was its software's ability to host third-party plug-ins — instruments and effects — that raised it above other self-contained grooveboxes.

It's truly liberating to audition and select patches like this, without having to consider which plug-in they come from. It's pretty versatile, whether you're building complex instruments using its key and velocity zones or simply dragging in a long sample to be triggered. The MASCHINE software can be used standalone, or with any DAW, meaning that MIKRO fits easily into any music-making workflow all while costing significantly less than previous generations.
