For Grace time is running out to solve the family rifts that have been going on for the last thirty years. When I started the book, I wasn’t that sure about the characters as Grace is easy to understand and love, however, the same can’t be said for her granddaughter, beautifully portrayed as a Head Teacher, following in her grandfather’s footsteps, whereas her daughter hates school and the tension between the two is palpable. Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One's Gavin and Stacey, which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins. The time she looses her cool is with her academic mum which she is the opposite like the rest of the family it seems.

Told by a series of flashbacks the stories of Grace, Alys, Elin and Beca are revealed, together with a surprise twist at the end.

The characters in this one generally are likeable accept Alys making me warm to the writing of her even more.

The reader is given windows into the thoughts and experience of each woman, but some of their secrets are only revealed later in the plot. But now - just as Father Coffey proclaims the coming of the electricity - the rain clouds are lifting. The Times Crime Book of the MonthGuardian Best Crime and Thrillers----------'A warm, wise and witty warning never to underestimate the elderly' Val McDermid'I completely fell in love with it' Shari Lapena'This is properly brilliant. Also I loved that it is set in Wales, with such familiar and comforting use of the Welsh language and idioms, so reminiscent of my own upbringing. I must be very careful about spoilers in this delicious novel revolving around this family so full of resentment, long-held anger, prodigal daughters, and cold-water swimming.I often find it hard to keep up with multigenerational novels and each chapter written from someone else’s perspective but the transitions in this were pretty seamless and the humour was just right.
