About this deal

Eunice leaves a dead end job and takes an exciting one in publishing with a witty and charismatic boss.

As the end nears, he bequeaths his secret life’s mission to his unsuspecting assistant, Laura, leaving her his house and and all its lost treasures, including an irritable ghost. She then added more than a few eccentrics, a feisty spirit and a sweet innocent by the name of Sunshine whom you will come to love, and gave us a story brimming with wit, wisdom and charm galore. Laura befriends Anthony’s gardener, Freddy, and a 19-year-old neighbor, Sunshine, who has Down's syndrome. This book was such a wonderful, delightful, quiet and heartwarming tale that I wish I would have loved a little bit more. There is a parallel story about Eunice and Bomber, and the tragedies and triumphs that litter their lives through time. The Keeper of Lost Things is a delightful easy-read book with a unique story that is entertaining and highly enjoyable. I mostly read adult books but do have the occasional foray into YA and middle grade when the mood takes. When Anthony dies, he leaves everything to Laura, with his last wishes being that she attempt to find the owners of the lost things and that she befriend his neighbor, Sunshine.

Overall, a read I would suggest to anyone who wants a quick, quirky read that will lift their spirits. At Books2Door, we believe that reading is a fundamental skill that every child should have to help improve their vocabulary, grammar, and critical thinking skills. The story of lost things was intended to be an insight into lost souls and self discovery but we felt that it was a very shallow exploration of this theme. We agreed, however, that reading is best done in bigger chunks of time than half an hour before bed; that reading is highly important to us however we do it, especially as now (being mostly a retired community) we have more time to concentrate on it; and that a reading group has the advantage of presenting us with books we might not have chosen for ourselves, thus opening up new windows onto the world. Many thanks to the Public Library system, and the many Librarians that manage, organize and keep it running, for the loan of this book!Whilst all the characters were really well portrayed and the minor characters were given enough scope to support the main characters and add to the narrative - Sunshine was something else - a beautifully written girl whose character developed through the story; every time she appeared I could see her in my mind. It is “holiday read” material rather than a deep and meaningful work of literature, but I don’t have a problem with that. But the final wishes of the Keeper of Lost Things have unforeseen repercussions which trigger a most serendipitous series of encounters. Once a celebrated author of short stories now in his twilight years, Anthony Peardew has spent half his life collecting lost objects, trying to atone for a promise broken many years before.
