About this deal

Frequently they don’t even get a proper goodbye, and it presumably happens offscreen between the chapters. it's entirely possible that instead of appreciating that I appreciate her service to me, she'll tell me to get off my fucking ass and turn the lights on myself.

Instead, there was cream-colored paving, smooth as butter and just as warm, lined with signs people made to let other people know which way to go if they wanted to rest and eat and not be alone.

I suppose this is just another way of saying that A Prayer for the Crown-Shy is a companion book about two companions, and it has an alternate tone. Anyway, if I had to say something even remotely evaluative about the book, I’d say it suffers mildly—like a mouse’s squeak of mildly, that’s how mildly—from having a less well-defined journey than the first book.

It was only after they’d spent years converting unfiltered sun into life-giving sugar that they began to expand horizontally, transforming into behemoths as the centuries drummed on. All in all, A Prayer for the Crown-Shy is a more unique, but still dazzling novella that only slightly disappoints. In short, I love this series so much, it is as generous and loving as it is marvelous and deeply confronting. There are tender moments scattered here and there throughout the read, but this book has none of Dex’s wisdom offering tea monk services (they’re more of a guide in this novella), and the towns they visit are crowded with fans and onlookers, thus not offering the kind of solitude that A Psalm for the Wild-Built brought to readers by being set in the forests and mountains. Mosscap, too, comes off as a little bit needier in this book, which can be a bit of an annoyance because it seemed to be so wise in the first book. There was a shrine to Bosh placed before the stump, a stone pedestal with a carved sphere set on top. These two travel Dex's world now and Mosscap, the robot, gets to see the world the robots left and ask the people what they need.

Be pleased to find a story of community, care and compassion, in a different and imaginative context.

It is never overbearing or preachy, the writing gently conveys to the reader the struggles that the main characters experience in determining who they are and what they want to be. The second Monk and Robot book is a spiritually nourishing, often funny queer utopian novella about two increasingly close companions, a nonbinary monk and a sentient robot. Sibling Dex, in his capacity as a renowned tea monk, would undoubtedly say that a key requirement of perfect tea is allowing it to steep; letting it soak in the water long enough to be powerful.

Sometimes it is nice to spend a couple of hours reading something where you know nothing terrible is going to happen and that everything will work out by the end.

Houses were invented for excellent reasons, as were shoes, plumbing, pillows, heaters, washing machines, paint, lamps, soap, refrigeration, and all the other countless trappings humans struggle to imagine life without. Inside the small economy of a novella, Chambers gives them both weight and weightlessness all at once: they are not so grim or overwhelming that they overshadow the overall charm and playfulness and humor of the story (which is frankly feels-pummelingly good! I used this series to get me out of a reading slump as they’re the perfect length and such a beautiful and hopeful read. Further disclaimer: Readers, please stop accusing me of trying to take down “my competition” because I wrote a review you didn’t like.
